Lomandra longifolia/Sagg is an edible species from the Xanthorrhoeaceae/Grasstree family and has a common distribution in dry forests and coastal heathlands, photographed here in a paddock beside Carlton River. The white inner leaf base is edible and has a refreshing nutty taste, but the flesh can sometimes be stringy so we thinly slice the white base before eating fresh or stir frying. HARVESTER BEWARE – this plant protects its fleshy base by growing spiky, eye piercing leaf tips so please wear goggles to protect your eyes!
