Coprosma quadrifida/Prickly Currantbush is an edible species from the Rubiaceae/Madder family with a distribution in damp gullies and alongside freshwater creeks. This plant is widespread in southern Australia and photographed here on my friends block at Bicheno. The red currants are tasty and eaten fresh, dried or preserved. We find the best way to remove the small soft fruits from the prickly branches is to hold a large bag underneath and gently shake the branch. The ripe currants fall off into the bag and the unripe remain attached!
