Carpobrotus rossii/Native Pigface is an edible species from the Aizoaceae family with a natural distribution on rocky and sandy shorelines in Tasmania. This plant is hardy in most soils and provides a fire-retardant ground cover, photographed here in my garden at Carlton River. The fleshy fruit and leaves are edible and we eat them fresh from the bush and add them to salads. If I burn myself in the kitchen I run straight to the pigface plant, tear off a green leaf and squeeze the flesh onto my burn for an instant cooling effect.
