Apium prostratum or Sea Celery is an edible Tasmanian species from the Apiaceae/Celery family with a distribution on the coastline near the sea. Photographed today at the mouth of Carlton River are two varieties, var. filiforme with the slender stems and var. prostratum with the creeping stems. This parsley flavoured herb has been a popular food throughout history and I love breaking the leaves fresh on 2-minute noodles or adding to foods as a substitute for parsley. Although a coastal species, the sea-celery grows well in the garden or in a pot by the window and can usually be purchased online as seeds.
