Hakea nodosa, Yellow Needlebush is an edible species from the Proteaceae family that has edible nectar filled yellow flowers. This species has an uncommon distribution in the wetter areas of Tasmania’s north east and is photographed below planted in my garden and growing naturally in a wet sclerophyll forest near Gladstone. The sweet winter flowers are protected by needle-like leaves, so we carefully pluck the flowers from the stem and eat them unwashed as a garnish on desserts. The flowers are surprisingly easy to eat and dissolve nicely in the mouth along with the dessert. The flowers can also be steeped with tea to add a hint of sweetness.
